Books are Magic

Books Are Magic was born in May 2017. Emma Straub and Michael Fusco-Straub live and work in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and Books Are Magic is their third child. Their two sons are very excited about the new addition to the family.

You can read more about their adventures at

Here are their favorites for this summer and readers feedback:

How To Love a Jamaican by Alexia Arthurs

"I loved this collection about female bodies, sexuality, and growing up black and Jamaican. Arthurs has a voice not often heard or seen in literature, and this collection stands out for it. Can't decide where exactly I was swept away - somewhere between the depictions of youth and female friendships. This book is magic! For full effect, read on a beach with palm trees (or skyscrapers) in the distance." - Ikwo

LESS by Andrew Sean Greer

"A book about coming to terms with the end of love, through the lens of a man who is taking a trip around the world. You'll love visiting seven different countries with hapless, heartbroken Arthur Less. Also, it's hilarious. And won the Pultizer!" - Liv

Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi

"...is this tensely intimate and utterly hilarious novel that examines the joys and pitfalls of a modern, coming-of-age romance. Perfect for fans of Rainbow Rowell and Nicola Yoon. I finished this book cry-laughing and wishing for more. Mary H.K. Choi, you are my hero." - Mabel

The Pisces by Melissa Broder

"Here is your sexy summer read! Lucy is a recently single woman who takes a turn for the sociopathic when she meets and falls for an equally sociopathic merman. It's perfect! This book is ugly, hot, salty, and full of tantalizingly bad decisions." - Colleen

Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero

"Imagine your favorite episode of Scooby-Doo, except it was directed by Neil Gaiman and inspired by Lovecraft. MEDDLING KIDS is the most fun, erratic, grownup summer detective club novel you never knew you wanted. If you like fantasy or horror or mysteries or creative, inventive writing, read this novel." - Abby

CIRCE by Madeline Miller

"Circe is about a woman who is born at the bottom of the divine totem pole: she is the daughter of a Titan, but has no godly powers. She is tormented and reviled and abused; disregarded, exiled, assaulted. She is given nothing, and with nothing she creates her own power. A solitary witch, she forges her own path, clawing out her place in a world that would punish her for existing. There's more to women characters than madonnas and whores. Let Madeline show you the way." - Abby

Our Summer Picks:

Animals Eat Each Other by Elle Nash

As exhilarating today as it was in 1984 (and now in a brand new edition), Blood and Guts In High School breaks pretty much every
rule of fiction, working simultaneously as cut and paste, high art experimentation in the tradition of Burroughs and as a raw confessional from an author who prefigured the feel of so much modern feminist art.  Shocking, surprising, and finally just a fun read.

Blood and Guts in High School by Kathy Acker

Elle Nash's debut novel tells the story of a protagonist who finds herself in the throes of a relationship not her own, possessed by love and jealously. A masterfully succinct book about lust, obsession, and Satanism, Animals Eat Each Other is a perfect exploration of queer identity and sexuality for your deviant summer.
